2.5 million Floridians on food stamps
Tallahassee, FL – Florida has set a new milestone… and it ain’t a good one either. As of today there are now 2.56 million Floridians on food stamps. More than one out of every eight residents, 13.6 percent of the Florida population relies on the program to help put food on the table. That number the largest in Florida history has been growing steadily for almost three years, as the inept state and county governments continue to urge Yankees to move down in a desperate attempt to get more tax revenue despite the fact there is no jobs for them when they move down here.
This irresponsible practice by Tallahassee and the various county and city governments lead to a massive real estate boom during the mid to late 1990’s in which an estimated 2 million Yankees and foreigners (mostly from Canada and the UK) were lured into the sunshine state. During that same time frame less than 1.7 million jobs was created and out of those 1.7 million jobs only 18% paid over $30,000 a year.
If that was not bad enough, the current 4 year old economic depression in Florida all but wiped out 1.5 million of those jobs.
If you do the simple math, Florida added about 2 million legal residents (we are not counting the estimated 5 million illegal Latinos, but it should be noted that they are here as well) and only added 200,000 jobs. This math just does not add up.
“These are people who have never been on benefits in their entire life — they’re electricians, they’re plumbers,” said George Sheldon, secretary of the Department of Children & Families, which administers the program. “It is a whole new population of poor people that have never been poor before.”
To qualify for food stamps, Floridians must make 133 percent of the federal poverty level or less. For a family of four, that’s $28,668 a year.
