Springtime advice

The other day I spotted green parrots squawking and roosting in a coral tree. This is Southern California, and green parrots are naturalizing here. Back in the dark ages, i.e. thirty years ago (man that sounds so ancient!) , we had tons of them when we used to live in UCLA married student housing near Pico and Sepulveda.  More recently I have seen huge flocks of them roosting in the trees near Cal State Long Beach and My favorites are the yellow and black orioles who we learned like to eat honey bees. I learned one day that those particular orioles build a very clever little nest by weaving the strands from the palm into hanging baskets under the fronds. I was sitting on the sofa in the house reading a book and slowly began to realize that the background noise to my reading was the distinctive sound of baby birds madly squalling for their lunches every five minutes or so. I finally looked up and out the window and discovered the palm frond nest and saw the parents dutifully delivering meals to their offspring. Sadly these baby birds eventually died. I assume that someone in the neighborhood had sprayed for insects. It certainly wasn't us spraying our bees. Speaking of which, we have stellar jays who also eat the honey bees. Having honey bees in the backyard has provided a number of creatures with tasty food. The lizards hang out just under the hives and seem to clean up those bees that have been evicted. One always has to wonder how the lizards and the birds avoid being stung when chowing down a fat, succulent bee, complete with sharpened stinger. The seasons are far less obvious here in southern California. You have to really know the signs of spring. It's not like the frigid, icy winter melts and the world springs to life. But it has warmed up. The blue oak has leafed, the plum trees are in bloom. The bees are flitting about in the mad profusion of aromatic...
